Tarocchi Trevelyon Miscellany 1608
is one of my favorite decks published by Museo dei Tarocchi thus far. Ever since
Ernesto Fazioli
generously gifted me a miniature version for Christmas, back in 2016, I have appreciated its gentle splendor and old English charm, often carrying it with me on travels, for company and comfort.
I'm so delighted Tarocchi Trevelyon Miscellany is now available in this big, beautiful size, although with only 30 hand-signed, numbered
sets available, I imagine it may sell out soon! I adore everything about this
sweet deck, with its idyllic visions of merry old England.
Under Ernesto's discerning eye, the perfect image was found for each of the 22 Major Arcana, from the ancient, 594 paged, richly illustrated miscellany of the
Shakespearean era.
With it's sumptuous, soothing colors and darling details, (especially the facial expressions, costumes and floral designs), it is a dear deck to have in one's collection.
The 2-sided leaflet is in Italian only, though those of us familiar with the Tarot should have no trouble identifying the cards. The backs are a lovely, tactile design of harmonizing
tones and
shapes. It is not reversible (shown below).
The textured, matte art stock is perfectly suited for this deck and really brings out the richness of the
colors, and details of the costumes, natural settings and charming characters. Even the Devil and Death have their
charm in this deck.
The Tarot Trevelyon Miscellany deck comes in a simple but elegant book-style cover, tied with colored twine. A title card is attached on top, with a
signature card tucked inside that is numbered and signed by Ernesto. The
titles on the 22 cards are in Italian and have traditional Roman numerals. Justice is
the 8th card and Strength (Forza) the 11th.
In my humble but enthusiastic opinion this is a great deck for Tarot collectors and historians, especially those who
enjoy that certain grace and style of the Shakespearean era.
A Brief Overview of Thomas Trevelyon's Miscellany of 1608, London England
Thomas Trevelyon, was a craftsman, scribe and pattern maker from London who created an impressive miscellany in the year 1608 when he was 60 years old.
Its 594 oversized pages depicted life in Shakespeare's England in all its compelling complexities; from the mythical to the mundane, the poetic to the practical, and the religious to the secular.
He created this impressive collection for the amusement and edification of family and friends. This massive manuscript
contained writings and images appropriated from various books, engravings and woodcuts of the era and included historical and practical information, such as an illustrated calendar; proverbs and parables, lists of virtues and vices,
both scriptural and secular words of wisdom, astronomical diagrams; distances between London and major cities all over the world; descriptions of Cambridge and Oxford Universities and a list of shires, cities and boroughs of England.
It also included details on the early rulers of Britain. And cautionary verses with illustrations of the Twelve Degrees of the World, the Five Alls, the Nine Worthies, and Nine Muses, the Seven Deadly Sins, the Seven Virtues, the
Seven Liberal Sciences, and details on Pagan, Jewish, and Christian heroes. There was a section devoted to the patterns of mazes,
and on lettering, floral and abstract borders and
other designs suitable for embroidery, woodwork, artwork and gardening. This monumental work, full of gorgeous, detailed illustrations, provides an unparalleled vision of the interests, concerns, and
aspirations of an exceptionally talented Londoner in an important historical time.
