After so many years without tarot decks made in Denmark, it was surprising for me to be able to
review the
Javanne tarot
in the last issue of The Playing Card. How much more amazing is it,
that once more I can present a tarot deck made in Denmark. "Tromborg Tarot" is named after its
creators, Johnny and Birgith Tromborg and the deck appears to have been a labor of love. At the
same time we have here, for the first time in Denmark, a tarot deck which definitely falls into the
category of Waite-Smith "remakes". Why this unfortunate urge to cling to images and situations created
nearly 100 years ago, and which can not be done better anyway, and instead take advantage of the
possibility to create something new and different, for example minors depicting life situations
from our days and relating to 21st century people instead of reusing the romantic ages the
Waite-Smith is settled in? To self-produce a 78 card tarot deck is after all a costly affair.
This said, the Tromborg deck is quite a charming little deck despite the rather primitive artwork
by Johnny Tromborg. It is undoubtedly meant as a "beginners tarot", cleaned up from most traditional
tarot symbolism as it is. On the reverse side of all the cards are printed (in Danish language)
sentences by Birgith Tromborg giving good advice on how to act in life; in the USA they would be called
"affirmations". There comes a 6 page booklet with the deck, recommending to draw a daily card and
a card for the year. The cards are small (like ordinary playing cards), the cardboard and print
quality is OK and the deck comes in a good quality box with two compartments.
